The Gift of Flight

✈4 min read

Some gifts sit in a cupboard. This one gets described to people years later. If you are buying for someone who has ever looked up at an airplane and wondered, here is how to do it properly.

Why it works as a gift

Most gifts fail in one of two ways. Either the person already has one, or they would not have chosen it themselves.

A flight avoids both. Almost nobody has done it, and a great many people have quietly wanted to for years without ever booking one, because it always seems like something to do later. Being handed it removes that entirely.

There is nothing to store, nothing to size and nothing to return.

Which one to give

A discovery flight

A discovery flight is a hands-on introductory lesson with an instructor. After a brief introduction and safety briefing, the participant gets into the aircraft promptly and may handle the controls during the flight under the instructor’s supervision. Available options, flight time and total visit length are shown on the current product page.

Give this if: they have talked about learning to fly, they are curious about how it works, or they are the kind of person who would rather do a thing than watch it. Eligible instructional flight time may be entered in the participant’s logbook by the instructor and may count toward future certificate requirements.

A helicopter tour

A helicopter tour is a passenger sightseeing experience flown by a professional pilot. The route may include Louisville landmarks depending on the tour selected, weather, air traffic control, temporary restrictions, and the pilot’s judgment. Tours are conducted in the Robinson R44 under Cardinal Wings’ applicable authorization and remain subject to passenger weight, combined weight and balance, weather, aircraft availability and pilot approval.

For the fuller pictures, read Louisville helicopter tour views and what a helicopter ride is like.

Give this if: the point is the experience and the view rather than the flying. Also the better choice for a couple or for someone who wants to enjoy it rather than concentrate.

A gift card

Give this if: you genuinely do not know which they would prefer, or you want them to choose their own date. A gift card lets the recipient choose how to use it and contact the front desk when they are ready to request a date.

The occasions this actually suits

A milestone birthday. The gift someone remembers at 40 or 60 is usually the one that was not a thing.

An anniversary. A flight near golden hour can make a memorable anniversary experience when scheduling, weather and operating conditions permit.

A parent and child. Something done together rather than given.

Retirement. Frequently a long-postponed ambition finally getting its moment.

Graduation. Especially for a teenager who has mentioned aviation. For airplanes and helicopters, a student may be eligible to solo at age 16 and apply for a private pilot certificate at age 17 after meeting all applicable training, medical, knowledge, experience and testing requirements.

Corporate and thank-you gifts. Memorable in a category where almost nothing is.

Practical things a buyer should know

  • Weight matters. Small aircraft have real weight and balance limits and they are not negotiable. If it is likely to be a consideration, ask when you buy rather than letting the recipient discover it.
  • Weather moves flights. Not a fault, a feature. Nobody flies a first flight in conditions that would spoil it, so build in a little flexibility.
  • Fear of flying is not the same as fear of small aircraft. Plenty of nervous airline passengers love this, because you can see out and you understand what is happening. But do not spring it on someone who has said clearly that they do not want to.
  • Ask about age and passenger limits if you are buying for a child or a group.
  • Golden hour books first. If you want the sunset slot, plan ahead.

How to actually give it

The envelope is better than the announcement. Follow the delivery and redemption instructions shown during the current purchase process. If the gift is for a specific date, confirm scheduling with the front desk before presenting it as fixed.

If it is a surprise for a specific date, call us first and we will help you plan around the weather rather than against it.

The Cardinal Wings gift card

Buying one

Options and current pricing are on our gift cards page. If the recipient has mentioned learning to fly, our discovery flights page explains exactly what happens on one, which is useful to read before choosing.

The gift card itself can be bought online in any amount you choose, from $50 to $2,500, and it arrives ready to print or forward.

To ask which would suit someone in particular, call the front desk on (502) 452-2115. The front desk can explain the available options and help you compare which experience may suit the recipient.

Not sure which to give?

Describe the person to the front desk. They can explain the available options and help you compare which experience may suit the recipient. A certificate works if you would rather they chose.
